Birthday Week for Elder Layton

Landon-Momma, ya there?

Michelle- I am! Hi!!

Landon- Cool! So listen... I really don't have anything to write to you in a letter this week... As my birthday gift from you to me, will you permit me not to write you a letter this week. Then I will write you a really good letter next week! Promise! I mean, I don't even have pictures...

Michelle- Of course! You doing well? Do anything fun today?
Are you in a hurry?

I let him off too easy didn't I? Can't tell the boy no ;)

Landon- Haha yay!!! Thanks mom and yeah, I have really taken to reading. I have been reading Doctrine of Salvation by Joseph Fielding Smith which is pretty awesome... Making me want to get married haha. But No i'm not in a hurry.

Michelle- Married? That's a good idea just take your time and get that right girl!

Landon- Oh there is a whole chapter in there on choosing the right person to marry... And girls have it a lot easier than boys... Dang society!

Michelle- Easier? How's that?

Landon- Because he talks about how in today's society it is the man that always approaches the marriage and all that. And sometimes women never get proposed to by worthy men that will give them exaltation... So like, President Smith said that it is better that women don't get married at all in the first place rather than marrying some guy that won't be worthy of exaltation..

Michelle- Well I see I guess I would agree with that! No package yet?

Landon- I asked Elder Poll yesterday but he said that it didn't come... He said I have a letter one that was like the 25 dollar ones.... Is that from you?

Michelle- Yes. I didn't send a box.
They said in an email from Semken they have had problems with the boxes.
Okay now I'm sad we don't get a letter. How about a paragraph?

Landon- Don't be sad! You are talking to me right now right?

Michelle: Okay... I'll make something from this. So BHS didn't make it to the turf…

Landon- I know... They kind of have a rough year huh?

Michelle- Ya they did. Not everyone can be as good as you guys were ;)
What about jeans and garments for you here?

Landon- Oh yeah... I totally tossed my jeans like, a year ago haha. I never wore them, and they were really big.. I do need garments though...

Michelle- What size jeans do you think?
I guess we could go and buy some the following Monday morning.

Landon- Yeah I would like to make sure that they fit my curvy figure...
I still have clothes at home though right?

Michelle- Oh no we burned everything!

Landon- Haha nooooo!!!!!

Michelle- A lot of your clothing is in boxes from when Jordan and Cam lived here and from the remodel. Rather than me putting it all back I thought maybe you would want to go through it and see what you wanted to keep and put back what you wanted. Or I can put it all back too. Preference?

Landon- Oh yeah that is a good idea for sure! I mean I don't know what is in style anymore... So some people are gonna have to help me with that haha. Or I will be wearing white shirts and slacks for the rest of my life...

Michelle- That's funny. We will have to go to the store and see what is in style I really do feel like it’s the same as when you left though. Tells you what I know...

Landon- Haha I'm sure that not much has changed... Heck I can just wear my basketball shorts and sweat shirts like I did before the mission.

Michelle- Zone conferences this week?
Getting hot again in Africa?

Landon- Yeah it is super hot here now! Sheesh! And some guy is like drilling a hole in our wall for some reason and it is super loud haha. And yeah Zone conference is this Thursday. Last one of the mission!

Michelle- So exciting! Funny about the hole.

Landon- Yeah I don't even know...
Have you ever heard of the book "As A Man Thinketh"?
Michelle: Yes I thinketh so. Ha Are you reading that book?

Landon- No.. It was cited in my Book of Mormon study manual and I wanted to read it..
Been studying a lot lately about personal conversion and really being born again.

Michelle- That's so cool!!!
I'm proud of you! I really am.

Michelle- I sent him this info... "The title is influenced by a verse in the Bible from the Book of Proverbs, chapter 23, verse 7: “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” The full passage, taken from the King James Version, is as follows: Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words. While the passage suggests that one should consider the true motivations of a person who is being uncharacteristically generous before accepting his generosity, the title and content of Allen's work refer to the reader himself."

Landon- Is the guy who wrote it a member? James Allen?
I thought that I saw his name again somewhere else one time...

Michelle- Yes it looks like he was or is I guess. I copied and sent him this info...
"James Allen (February 15, 1806 – August 23, 1846) was a U.S. Army officer who organized the Mormon Battalion and was commander of Fort Des Moines (1843–1846), the fort from which the City of Des Moines grew. He was also in charge of improvements to the harbor of Chicago as well as producing maps of the U.S. frontier.[1]Allen was born in Ohio. He graduated from West Point in 1829. In 1832, he accompanied Henry Schoolcraft on an expedition to the headwaters of the Mississippi River, which led to Allen producing the first accurate map showing the lakes and streams of the headwaters. In 1833 he was assigned to the First Regiment of Dragoons, where he served as an engineer in the exploration of the Indian country of the Southwest. Allen oversaw improvements to the harbor of Chicagoin 1834. In 1842 he was transferred to Iowa, taking charge of the Sac and Fox Agency ("Fort Sanford") and then Fort Des Moines No. 2. After Fort Des Moines No. 2 was abandoned in 1846, it became the core of what is now the modern City of Des Moines. He was sent to Mt. Pisgah, Iowa, to a camp of homeless Latter-day Saints who had been driven from their homes by anti-Mormon mobs, to recruit a battalion of 500 men to fight in the Mexican-American War. Initially the Mormons were suspicious of him, but after he met with Mormon leader Brigham Young, Young fully endorsed the plan. Allen served as the commanding officer of the Battalion from the July 16, 1846 until his death on August 23, 1846. He was the first officer buried at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery."

Landon- Oh it's like a really old book! Haha.

Landon- Oh it's not long at all! I can just read it here...

Michelle- Oh good.

That is where it ended. Hope you enjoyed some of our little chat from today. I did send him a nice long letter from home so he did have all of that info in his brain. I thought I would let him call the shots on how much time he wanted to use today. Since it was my gift to him...

I guess he had a lot of reading to do. He never was much of a reader before the mission so I am so happy that he has discovered the joy of it! He does a lot of his reading and studying online on his p-day.

Not to mention any girls that he has to write to ;)

It's always so reassuring to hear from him in real time and see that all is well with him. Happy, healthy, and doing so well! What more could a mom want? Okay well maybe a letter ;) His Birthday is on this Saturday the 9th. I sent him a package filled with dollar store birthday party items and some candy that he had requested. Instead of paying the $78 shipping to send a box we bought him a sheep skin seat cover for his Bronco. Thought that might be more fun for him since he is so close to coming home!

So proud of this young man! I'm honored to be his mom and feel so blessed. He is working hard as Zone Leader and will finish strong!

Michelle
